I think Andrej's email below is worth reading carefully.
It's clear to me that OpenAI on its current path is on a path of certain failure relative to Google. Several signals support this. The recent departures, the inability to retain senior researchers, the compute deficit, the lack of clarity around the for-profit transition.
I have considered this carefully. Tesla is the only path that could even hope to hold a candle to Google. Even then, the probability of being a counterweight to Google is low. Not zero, but low.
What we have right now is a recipe for guaranteed failure.
